A Guide to Avoiding Phishing Scams

In the fast-paced world of real estate, safeguarding your digital information is as crucial as protecting physical property. Phishing scams are fraudulent attempts to steal sensitive information by posing as legitimate entities. As an older real estate agent, it's imperative to understand and combat these threats to protect your clients, finances, and reputation.

Here’s how to stay secure:

  1. Stay Informed. Be sceptical of urgent emails asking for personal information—verify the sender by checking email addresses and links closely.

  2. Use Strong Passwords. Use complex passwords and change them regularly, employing a password manager for convenience.

  3. Be Invincible. Enable two-factor authentication for an additional security layer.

  4. Keep your software updated to defend against the latest cyber threats.

  5. Secure Your Networks. Avoid conducting business over public Wi-Fi networks.

  6. Educate Your Clients. Inform and educate your clients about these risks to protect your mutual interests.

  7. When Doubt Knocks, Check It Out. If you suspect a phishing attempt, confirm with the alleged sender through known contact details. Should you fall victim, change your passwords immediately, secure your bank accounts, warn your clients, and report the incident to the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

What If You Take the Bait?

  2. Change all your passwords.

  3. Contact your bank to secure your accounts.

  4. Alert your clients to prevent further spread of the scam.

  5. Report the incident to the authorities, such as the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).

Remember, your digital vigilance safeguards not just your information but also the trust placed in you by your clients. In the internet age, your cybersecurity is as crucial as the locks on the doors of the properties you represent. Stay safe online, just as you do offline.
